Trials for people with Ulcerative Colitis (23-503 Part 4). Study Payment £1,500 + reasonable travel expenses

We are looking for people with active ulcerative colitis (UC) to take part in a trial of an experimental new medicine to treat the condition.

To take part, you must:

  • be aged 18 to 75
  • have a BMI between 18 and 35, and weigh at least 50 kg
  • have active ulcerative colitis, that isn’t responding to first line treatment (5-ASAs, azathioprine, biologic, or small molecule) and have been referred for a change in therapy,
  • be in general good health otherwise
  • be willing to use contraception – we’ll tell you what’s acceptable

To take part, you must not:

  • have inflammation of the rectum, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease-unclassified, indeterminate colitis, or a history of radiation colitis or ischemic colitis
  • have any complications of UC (e.g. megacolon, abdominal abscess, symptomatic colon stricture [narrowing of the colon], stoma, or stenosis)
  • have had a large colonic resection (surgery) or surgery for UC before
  • regularly get acid reflux (heartburn), or use certain medicines for acid reflux (including those you can get without a prescription like proton pump inhibitors) more than once a month
  • have any allergies (except hayfever) that requires treatment
  • use any prescribed medicine (except for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if you’re a woman)
  • have used any nicotine or tobacco-containing products in the last 3 months
  • be addicted to drugs or alcohol, or drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week

There might be other reasons that make you unsuitable.

During the two weeks before the study you’ll have a screening visit to see if you’re suitable.  Then you’ll have a single study session of 2 days and 2 nights’ residence, and a follow-up visit.

You’ll take about 1 week to complete the study, from your admission to the ward until your follow-up visit.

If you complete the study, you’ll receive up to £1,500 and payment for reasonable travel expenses.
