Why are we doing the study?

Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is used to help people stop smoking.  NRT is a medication that provides a low level of nicotine (such as skin patches, gum, e-cigarettes, lozenges or mouth sprays), without the tar, carbon monoxide and other poisonous chemicals present in tobacco smoke.

E-cigarettes are a form of NRT, which some smokers use to help them quit smoking, but we don’t yet know all the risks associated with e-cigarette use (vaping).  Also, many people who vape wish to give up nicotine use altogether, but they find it difficult to do so, because they’re still addicted to nicotine.

QuickMist mouthspray (the study medicine) is an established NRT.  It helps people quit smoking by relieving their urges to smoke and any unpleasant withdrawal symptoms they might experience (such as feeling irritable or anxious, or being unable to sleep).  It works by delivering a low dose of nicotine, which is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lining of the mouth.  It has been shown to work more quickly than nicotine gum or lozenges.  We hope that QuickMist mouthspray might help people who use e-cigarettes to control their urges to vape, and so help them quit vaping and nicotine use altogether.
